Lights, Camera, Motion Capture!

You don't need expensive equipment to start using the Factorial Biomechanics analysis platform. A simple smartphone, tablet, or action camera can capture high-quality video for analysis. To optimize your process, we have prepared guidelines to effectively capture and analyze human movement using readily available technology.

Do you still have questions?

Select from the below to jump to the answer.

The platform is intended for movement analysis of a single person, with their full body and face visible to the camera, and maintained in the frame for the duration of the video. The camera should be placed at 4m (13ft) distance from the subject, who should be well illuminated and unobstructed.

The platform is provided as a free-access beta test, for more information see Beta Test Agreement.

You decide how detailed the analysis needs to be. Here's what you can do:
  • Export video files augmented with your selection of bone lines, joint markers, center of mass, and angles to share with colleagues or athletes.
  • Create and save varied movement data charts, to track and compare movements graphically, with as few or many traces as you need.
  • Download CSV or JSON files with raw data to build upon later.
  • In the Capture page, you can record a video wherever you are.
  • Enable camera capture and frame your subject
  • Start your session and record movement snippets
  • Review the data graphs visualizations
  • Revisit your analysis to assure continuity of care

In the Analyze page, you can analyze a video recorded anytime, anywhere.
  • Choose file from device
  • Review Settings and Visual options
  • Play video to ensure proper tracking
  • Select starting point on seeker bar and click Export
  • Evaluate movement data graphs and save desired configurations
  • We have built a powerful web-based platform, and optimized it for professional desktop capture and analysis of biomechanical data. However, the platform is also available on your mobile devices like your phone and tablets via your web browser.

    Requirements

These are just recommendations, because this platform is designed to work on any device.

    Device

The platform works best on desktop and access to the GPU can enhance your experience, especially when analyzing large video files with high fps.

    Browser

The platform works on most browsers, just be sure to keep yours up to date.

    Best viewed in high resolution

High resolution video analysis is made for the big screen, we have nothing to hide by showing approximations on a phone screen or having the analysis be made in the cloud.

You can access the platform on your phone or tablet, but the local model works best on desktop.

You can also use your phone as a mobile webcam and stream video data to your computer. This is available natively in macOS and iPhone configurations, and with third party apps.

We recommend using Chrome as your browser, and keeping it up to date.

Allowing your browser to access GPU acceleration will also improve your experience, here's how for macOS or Windows.

If your video is still lagging, we recommend selecting "Light Version" in Capture page, or selecting a slower speed in the Analyze page playback options.

Certain operating systems and browsers can work better when your screen brightness is turned to the maximum.

On the platform you can analyze most video formats ⎯ if you have trouble with a specific kind of video please let us know.

High velocity video like those made with slow motion capture modes on smart phones and action cameras at 120fps or 240fps are seamlessly processed.

If your computer doesn't have a GPU, you might have to analyze high fps videos by selecting a slower speed (50%) within the playback options.

The platform currently works with a single subject, for best performance their face should be visible, especially at the beginning.

The ideal camera position is around 4 meters (13ft) from the subject, and parallel to their movement plane. At the very least, the subject should be fully framed throughout the capture. Wide angle lenses allow for a shorter distance between the subject and camera, and can be useful, but can also cause distortion.

Bright yet diffused light is best, providing a crisp image without bothersome shadows. Good lighting also prevents cameras from automatically adjusting their frame rates below those needed for quality motion tracking.

The platform relies on the privacy provided by locally run models. Additionally, the platform uses the computing power of your browser for video analysis, thus your videos remain in your computer and are not uploaded to the cloud.

For additional information, see Privacy Policy.

Anonymization To uphold anonymity when desired, toggle "Anonymization" within Visual options to activate or deactivate the video in the background. This allows you to share motion analysis data without sharing your subject's identity.

The platform is always free for individuals.

  • For our team, "building in public" means that as we develop our solution to make biomechanics analysis accessible for a healthier world, we share the progress with the public. Sharing our progress in early stages is an invitation for discussion and conversations with the communities that supports our mission. With this approach we hope to develop a platform that professionals of the human movement sciences truly want, focus on innovation, and avoid delaying value.
